Technical Analysis of music videos

I watched this video a few times before i decided that it would be something i would consider doing. I enjoyed the long shots of the action taking place and the close-ups of the performers face to show the emotion of someone who is in the situation.  The long-shots appealed to me the most as i found it was not like some music videos where the cameras attention is on the performer/actor not the cause of the action. It gave a narrative feel to it.
The mise-en-scene in the video was very striking and made a great connection between the protagonist and antagonists. The fox hunters and the fur hood on the performers jacket although the connection is not made obvious until the end it keeps the audience intrigued as to why there is fox hunters chasing him. Much of the audience may of been shocked at first sight as the song title implies police not fox hunters. As i decided that my music video is to be quite physical i thought this music video would help me to decide on what type of shots i would use and all though i enjoyed the mise-en-scene connection i wasn't sure how i was going to use that for my idea.

With this music video i concentrated more on the landscape and how was portrayed by the camera shots and lighting. Lighting was very important for me to look at as i was planning on filming at night but with the equipment and budget i had it wasn't going to be an easy thing to accomplish well. This music video puts a lot of lighting down to the 'street' lights and buildings as well as the car lights. This helped me think of locations that included strong street lights and also how i was to use the car lights as a tool as well as just an appearance thing.
The video is also filmed in point of view shot of the dog which i also found useful for my idea as it is to be about what the character is seeing. The blurring and discolouring of the shots made me think on how i can make his point of view be more apparent to the audience.

Goodwin's theory

The six main points for Goodwins theory are 1. Music videos demonstrate genre charateristics. 2. There is a relationship between lyrics and visuals. 3. There is a relationship between music and visuals. 4. The demands of the record label will include the need for lots of close-ups of the artist and the artist may develop motifs. 5. There is frequently reference to notion of looking and particularly voyeuristic treatment of female body. 6. there is often intertextual reference.
I will be using these six main points to breakdown a music video to see if they apply. The music video I'll be analysing is Maroon 5 - This love

1. This music video strongly demonstrates the musics genre. Maroon 5 is considered a rock band and majority of rock music videos contain performance of the instrumental and lyrics. This is because rock music is known for its emphasis on the band being able to play there own instruments unlike pop groups that sing along to a tune that has been written for them.
2. Hand actions are used by the lead singer to emphasis the word 'goodbye' and an erotic implied scene is relayed to the audience to reveal the meaning behind the lyrics

I tried my best to feed her appetite
Keep her coming every night
So hard to keep her satisfied
Kept playing love like it was just a game
Pretending to feel the same
Then turn around and leave again

This use of lyrics and actions give the music video a better connection with the audience as they feel that the video was full of random acts and suggestions to the song but related well with it and what the band wanted to put across with their lyrics.
3. The music video kept with the stereotype of the rock band image by showing them play the instruments. The music video also shows the band playing in sync with the music dubbed over the top which gives it a more authentic feel to the musicians talent.
4. The video includes lots of close-ups on the lead singers outfits, one example would be the close up with him holding the mic with a bandanna wrapped round his wrist this plays on the rock persona of the band.
5. This point is very much shown in this video as the woman included is shown over half the time as implied nudity. This works for the bands persona as it makes males aspire to them as they feel they would attract women to them and women would swoon over them as the leader singer can be portrayed as a 'ladies man'.
6. There appears to be no intertextual reference to any other media outlets.

Auteur Theory

Tim Pope

The auteur theory describes that the film reflects the creative vision of the director.
Tim Pope shows his creative vision through his films in a way in which is apparent to the audience that is his influence. The music videos that Tim Pope has created for the bands like The Cure and The kasier chiefs shows his distorted and unique vision towards the story or meaning of the artists lyrics.

This video of The Cures 'friday I'm in love' shows how Tim Pope uses an unconventional way to create a scene or scenes for the video showing the backdrop changes and props changes within film simultaneously in the purposeful actions in the film, as if you would be in a theatre. The way in which the films changed throughout gives the disorderly fashion in which Tim Pope seems to prefer and can be Tim Popes idea of love it is fast paced and completely dis-functional. Tim Pope shows the life-line as it where for a couple life like the dinners, in bed and marriage which shows the audience the obvious message of 'love'.

Tim Pope makes a more apparent meaning to his creative vision as he perceives the lyrics as when love starts to fade it could be caused by a escape from a fearful situation e.g unplanned pregnancy. The skeleton scenes could be seen as a way of showing that we are only human. Tim Pope uses a clever concept to the lyrics of 'life is upon a wheel' of the rats are skeleton version as well to show that the man is similar to a rat possibly meaning his cowardice. The Kaiser Chiefs music video 'Everyday i love you less and less' shows Tim Popes creative vision more apparent then The Cures 'Friday I'm in love'.

Star Analysis

Pink

Alecia Beth Moore more famously known as PINK has seemed to have varied styles through out her career and although she has some what 'grown up' in her look, her persona and her self-representation has not changed, proven through certain aspects of her look.

The most apparent part of her look is the tom-boy influence within her fashion. Every outfit she wears has a pratical part to it such as what in the picture above revealing outfit but muscular looking high-heeled boots which throw-off the on-looking audience. As well as the outfits, she gives off quite an upfront and possibly perseved as aggressive approach to alot of her photos which is not stereotypical of a female artist. This tom-boy influenced look amplifies Pinks persona/representation of someone who cares only for their oppinion of themselves and isn't put-out by what others say.

Her haircut is a very idolised part about her overall image, the fact that it is copied through the female population and always seems inative at the time shows Pink's individuality and her 'so what' attitude.

Although the length never changes, the colour and styling is frequently changing. The colour is always flitting between pink and blonde, varying in shades. The pink hair colour is different but is a clever way to promote herself. She is reprented as a rebel in the pop female scene and what is rebellious in society... having striking pink hair. The connection between her hair and her representation could be seen as her own rebellious attitude or a form of the record company publising her for sales.

Refering back to Pink's style, she uses alot of basic tones and colours which help draw the audience to style or the extreme look to her clothes which inspires the idea that this woman has great confidence in herself. As well as her clothes giving off the confident vibe her body language and facial expressions show that she is self-assured. The style of clothing she wears has a punk influence that exaggerates Pink's rebillious repretation although as her career has gone on and the record company has less influence on Pink her clothes have become more 'girly' or feminime, giving the audience an inside look into how she can be considered more pop then rock.
